The Western Heritage Classic: All in a Day’s Work for these Cowboys

By Shanna Smith-Snyder

Cowboys, Western Classic, Abilene Texas, West TexasWhat began as a friendly competition between ranch cowboys in 1985 now draws competitors from all over Texas and as far away as Nebraska.

Now in its 26th year, the Western Heritage Classic brings working cowboys to Abilene annually to showcase their skills for enthusiastic audiences at the Taylor County Expo Center. This wonderful celebration of Texas tradition continues to touch the hearts of generations both old and new. The Western Heritage Classic regenerates old memories and creates new ones through a variety of events and activities that continue to make the weekend a success.

From the shows and displays to the delicious food, there is something for everyone to enjoy! This event kicks off tonight with a large parade and street dance through downtown Abilene. From authentic cowboys to horse-drawn wagons, HSU’s own six white horse riders and the world-famous Cowboy Band, the yearly parade provides a taste of the true West Texas. It is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Activities such as the World’s Largest Bit and Spur Show, chuckwagon cook-off, western art show, fiddler’s contest, the famous ranch rodeo and more are sure to provide fun for the entire family throughout the weekend at the Western Heritage Classic. During the rodeos on Friday and Saturday nights, the ranches will compete in events such as roping, bronc riding, cow milking, branding and more. All activities will continue through Sunday, closing with a cowboy church service on Sunday morning at the Expo Center.

What I love most about Western Heritage Classic, is that it provides people a view into the daily life of a working ranch cowboy. These good ‘ol boys aren’t posed on their horses — they’re just putting in a good day’s work!

Tickets can be purchased at the Taylor County Expo Center. For a full schedule of events or for more information, visit www.westernheritageclassic.com or call 325-677-4376.
