  • The Stars at Night are Big and Bright in Abilene

Enjoy an exciting evening of star gazing on the historic building’s rooftop with the Big Country Astronomy Club.     The Seuss-inspired Children’s Art and Literacy Festival is right around the corner and Abilene will truly be transferred for into the imaginative world of the beloved author!     How much is that doggie in the window? Find out at the Abilene Kennel Club Annual Dog Show! This dog show and obedience trial showcases all breeds of dog and you will have the opportunity to see each lovely pup up close!     Western Heritage Classic was a huge success last weekend! We hope you got the chance to be a part of that special event. If not? There are still more West Texas, cowboy experiences to be had. The Taylor County Expo will play host to the Taylor Country 4-H Horse and Open Show starting at 7:30 am on Saturday.   • Memories are Made in Abilene

    Make your plans to attend the 28th Annual Western Heritage Classic (WHC) tomorrow, May 10, through Saturday May 12. Held at the Taylor County Expo Center, this Abilene legendary event will showcase the essence of cowboy lifestyle and history: whether you’ve lived here your entire life or plan to have visitors, I am sure you will have fun, learn something new and make a few lasting memories. 

    The weekend festivities kick off with a free parade and street dance on 6:30 p.m. Wagons, riding clubs, antique cars and tractors, bands and floats all sport a western theme in this colorful display and celebrate into the night on the historic streets of downtown Abilene with dancing, food and western merriment. Enjoy the Center for Contemporary Arts “Cowboy Up” themed ArtWalk in conjunction with the parade and festivities.

    The WHC Ranch Rodeo kicks off at 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights in the Coliseum. Working cowboys compete in various events designed to test their ranch-handling skills like roping, bronc riding, team penning and more. Other events the Rhinestone Round Up Gala Friday night for a bit of glamour and the Chuck Wagon Cook-Off for a bit of yummy! Kiddos will love the children’s events including the Stick Horse Rodeo, Steer Dummying Roping Contest and more!     Need a laugh? Head down to the Historic Paramount Theatre to watch the 1935 screwball comedy, “Top Hat,” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The movement provided educational lectures and entertainment for the average American before the advent of mass media like radio, television and the internet.   • Upcoming Events in Abilene

    The Grace Museum will host “Tot Spot” this Thursday at 10 am and this Friday at 9:30 and 11 am. This popular Abilene program is for parents with children aged 3-5, features interactive activities and fun, entertaining gallery games. Cost is $5 for non-members and free for members.     Also on Friday, the National Center for Children’s Literature (NCCIL) will hold their “Art Adventure” at 10:30 am. Moms and tots are invited to this preschool program to explore the works in the gallery through visual art and verbal literacy. Can’t make the Art Adventure Friday morning? No worries because Family Fun Saturday is back from 1-4 p.m. NCCIL art educators help you and your little ones create works of art using the style and medium of the featured artist in the gallery, Dan Yaccarino. Yaccarion’s work is currently on display at the National Center for Children’s Literature in downtown Abilene. Children from all over the world know and love his works such as Unlovable, The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau, Five Little Pumpkins and more. Admission is free for both programs.     And take this as an opportunity to mark your calendars for this special event! Remember, this year’s festival will feature the works of Dr. Seuss. The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) and The Center for Contemporary Arts will exhibit more than 200 of Dr. Seuss’ paintings, sketches and sculptures. The Art of Dr. Seuss – A Retrospective Exhibition organized by Chase Art Companies and curator, William W. Deyer, celebrates the art and life of Theodor Seuss Geisel. During the festival, downtown Abilene will be transformed into the imaginative world of Dr. Seuss. Children will enjoy dramatic presentations from seven Dr. Seuss books throughout the weekend with art activities held after certain readings. They can meet the characters, see the movies and explore the art works while visiting the landmarks of Abilene. Six bronze sculptures of Dr. Seuss’ most beloved characters will be displayed throughout downtown. At the Abilene Zoo, visitors can board the Dr. Seuss inspired Safari Express Train to see animals, birds and reptiles. This is a must attend event. Tell your family, tell your friends to come and stay in Abilene this June to see our town transformed!

    Thursday evening Disability Resources Inc. will host their 25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner at the Abilene Civic Center. Sharon Randall, the acclaimed syndicated columnist in over 400 newspapers will speak. As a big sister to her disabled brother, Randall’s presentation will be a genuine first hand accountant on the importance of enriching the life of the disabled community. DRI is celebrating 25 years of providing residential care, vocational training and recreational activities to developmentally disabled adults. Dinner begins at 6:30 pm and is $75 a person.     The Abilene Community Theatre brings “The Spitfire Grill” production to Abilene for an exciting opening weekend. This play follows a feisty parolee who is in desperate pursuit to follow her dreams. Taking a cue from on a page from an old travel book to a small town in Wisconsin she finds a place for herself working at Hannah's Spitfire Grill, which is currently for sale. There are no interested offers in the only dining establishment in town, passionate newcomer Percy suggests to Hannah that she raffle it off. Percy charges $100 and requires an essay be written on why you want the grill. Soon, the restaurant is like the post office at Christmas. Mail is arriving by the wheelbarrow full and things are definitely heating up at the Spitfire Grill. Show times are Thursday-Saturday at 7: 30 pm.     Summer is almost upon us. I know many of you have worked hard the past few months to choose a healthy lifestyle in order to get in shape, improve overall health or lose weight. Ladies, if you have found yourself in a health rut, you’re in luck! The Healthy Woman Expo has made its way back to Abilene!


    From 4-6pm Thursday booths will fill the Abilene Civic Center with local vendors 
    highlighting products and services that will bring you to your best self! Enjoy free health screens for cholesterol and blood sugar!     These days, it’s hard to not know someone or even be someone who cancer has touched. My husband is a cancer survivor; my sister is a cancer survivor; my sweet Grandma Alice fought the good fight three times before the cancer took her.   • Spring is here: Abilene is Blooming!

Head over to Abilene Christian University’s Fulks Theatre to enjoy the opening weekend of “Emma,” the play based on the classic novel by beloved author Jane Austen and adapted by Michael Bloom. “Emma” tells the story of the endearing heroine of the same name who is slightly obsessed with romance but horribly in tune with her own romantic feelings. Watch Emma navigate through matchmaking adventures gone seriously awry on her quest to find love and herself.     The Discovery Center brings to Abilene “The Titanic Remembered Centennial Event” from 1 to 6 pm on Saturday. Have the opportunity to truly experience history by meeting the actors who played the roles of survivors of the RMS Titanic. You will be able to experience more than ten intriguing informative exhibits showcasing this tragic event. View documentary films regarding the history and sinking of the ill-fated ships. In conjunction, the Center will also show the acclaimed documentary film” Search for the Titanic.” Produced by Abilene oil tycoon Jack Grimm, the film follows three search expeditions financed by and participated in by Grimm, to find the Titanic.     Fall down the rabbit hole with the Children’s Performing Arts Series this weekend who bring to Abilene, “Alice in Wonderland.” Follow Alice and her friends on the adventures through the looking glass and into Wonderland in this full scale musical production from American Family Theater, audience members will follow Alice on her adventures through the looking glass and enjoy the iconic characters along with colorful sets, inventive costumes and creative staging.

    Take a cue from Dr. Seuss and explore Abilene differently this weekend. You never know what adventures await you or what fun could be had.

    Check out the amazing exhibits at the Grace Museum in downtown Abilene. Missing family, friends or home? Why not pop into the Grace to see the Sedrick Huckaby exhibit entitled, “Faith and Family.” Huckaby uses everyday aspects of his own personal life and takes inspiration from simple things: family members, homes and more, to create multifaceted paintings. These complex works of art draw you in and make you feel at home — making them a must-see exhibit. Interested in photography or an avid people watcher? The exhibit, “Friends & Neighbors: The Art of Photographing People” will surely give you a thrill. The exhibition is a study in varying approaches to photographing people including formal portraiture, documentary, fine art and avant-garde photography. Whether the locale is the war torn Middle East or a bunk house in rural West Texas, the photographs in this exhibition viewed together remind us of the power of the camera as a tool in the hands of a dedicated and talented photographer to transform a moment in time into a meaningful, expressive and profound statement about the human experience. On display will be original and reproduced memorabilia spanning Geisel’s editorial, advertising, military and book careers, along with estate authorized reproductions of his “Secret Art” collection.

    CALF is sponsored by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, an affiliate of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. Its mission is to promote, encourage and support the arts, and to enhance the image of Abilene as a center for the arts. The annual festival will feature a new artist next year.

I have been to several games over the past few years and enjoy them tremendously. Whether you are an adult or a kiddo, these games are so much fun to watch.     Spring is in the air and us fisherman (and ladies) “are itchin’ to get to catchin’.” Today is the last day to register for the Fishing Future Family Fish Camp. Take your six to 16-year-olds to this special fishing camp at Nelson Park Lake this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Help them learn the basic skills necessary to go fishing. All equipment will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you like. A hotdog lunch will be provided to all junior anglers and their families who register.     Taylor County Expo Center Interior Abilene Texas Rodeo Shows

    West Texas Barrel Racing Association Extravaganza gallops into the Taylor County Expo Center horse barn this Friday through Sunday. Watch a true Texan sport and enjoy participants of all ages. Office will open at 11:00 a.m. Friday with exhibitions starting from noon to 6:30 p.m. Racers 8 p.m. and under start at 7 p.m., followed by Open 4D, Youth 4D, Senior 3D who all run in the same draw.     The 20th annual Steam-N-Wheels Bike Race and Fun Ride zips back into the Big Country this Saturday at 10 a.m.. The City of Abilene Recreation Division and Abilene Bicycling Club sponsored event at Nelson Park gives you the opportunity to choose from three distances: a 48-mile race/tour, a 32-mile or a 12-mile fun ride course. Make this a family fun event as the race is open to all ages. Entry forms are available here. Cost is $25 per person until March 23 — it’s $30 per person after that date.     See who will be crowned Miss Frontier Texas! this Saturday at 6 p.m. at our very own Frontier! Texas. The final 12 contestants have advanced through the competitions by demonstrating frontier knowhow and showing off their rugged skills in a variety of frontier inspired challenges.
