MOUNTAIN LAKES OF LEWIS COUNTY, WV

The Mountain Lakes offers interesting and entertaining lessons in American and Appalachian history. Our important roots to the Civil War are evident in our state park and various landmarks throughout Lewis County. Museums, reenactments, fairs, festivals and the restoration and preservation of architecturally unique structures offer a wealth of opportunity to learn about our area and your country’s heritage.

Our commitment to the preservation of our resources, architecture and way of life are revealed in the many events and attractions you will enjoy throughout Lewis County.

One the best state parks in West Virginia embraces hundreds of acres in the Mountain Lakes. Stonewall Resort State Park features the 26-mile Stonewall Jackson Lake, camping sites, hiking and biking trails and a AAA rated five star resort.

The area's rich heritage is expressed with creativity by many artisans. Glass makers at Masterpiece Crystal, Appalachian Glass, and Willow Creek Glass handcraft beautiful works, often before your eyes. The art of winemaking is celebrated at Lambert's Vintage Wines. Enjoy tours and tasting in their stately cut stone winery surrounded by lovely, well-kept grounds.

Numerous museums house interesting artifacts and historic details we hope will never be forgotten. The West Virginia Museum of American Glass documents the history of glassmaking in our area and the state and houses thousands of works for visitors to enjoy. One of the best historic experiences in West Virginia is our own Jackson's Mill Historic Area Here visitors can see the boyhood home of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Lewis County's own Civil War hero. Guests on guided tours will see the Blaker Grist Mill in operation, the Mary Conrad and McWhorter cabins and many sights and sounds reflective of Appalachian history.

The local American Legion celebrates Lewis County's proud military heritage in the Mountaineer Military Museum. Artifacts and recorded facts and events are on display to enlighten visitors with regard to local, national and international wars and conflicts.

The history, architecture and lore of the recently re-opened Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is attracting interest across the country. Once a hospital for the mentally ill, the Asylum is open for tours and special events. Recently featured on PBS, Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum offers truly unique historic perspective.

Of course outdoor attractions are a large part of the Mountain Lakes experience. Dirt track racing at Mountain State Motor Speedway, muskie fishing in Stonecoal Lake and strolls through the tranquility of the beautiful gardens at La Paix Herb Farm are proof that there is an outdoor experience for everyone.

Lewis County's most incredible assets are the numerous lakes and lush green mountains we have inherited. A careful balance of preservation and allocation has resulted in a wide range of outdoor experiences we want to share with everyone.

Beautifully unique, the forested mountainsides and peaceful lake waters invite hiking and biking, camping, fishing and hunting, boating and golfing at every level. From sparkling sunrises, to warm sunsets and night skies illuminated by stars rather than city lights, there really are few places on earth as lovely as Lewis County's Mountain Lakes.

Oak, maple, birch, pine and various fruit trees populate the forests and provide homes for numerous animals. Common wildlife includes whitetail deer, squirrel, rabbit and hundreds of fowl species.

Trout, muskie, bass and catfish populate our lakes and streams. Water craft rentals and knowledgeable professionals throughout the area will assist you to ensure a one-of-a-kind water adventure. Whether you want to fish, swim or simply enjoy the land from atop the water, you will find the right fit in Lewis County.

More exciting than a city zoo and more thrilling than an amusement park, a vacation or meeting in the great outdoors of the Mountain Lakes is something everyone should experience.
