German Heritage and Texan Hospitality
Finding yourself in Fredericksburg is truly like finding yourself in a
part of the Old World. Fredericksburg, with its German flair, proud
history, many wineries, outdoor activities, shopping and fine food,
offers something for the entire family.
History in the Hills
Founded in 1846 by German settlers, this community maintains its proud
heritage today, and the city’s architecture has also been preserved in
a beautiful historic district. One of the outstanding features are the
quaint Sunday Houses, which are unique cottages built by the German
pioneers.
The National Museum of the Pacific War is dedicated to everyone who
served in the Pacific in World War II under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz,
a native son of Fredericksburg. This multiacre complex features several
distinct plazas, galleries and interactive exhibits.
The LBJ State and National Parks offer a historical look at the late
President Lyndon B. Johnson. Tour the Texas White House and the LBJ Ranch as well as the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farmstead that
depicts pioneer farm life.
In addition to attractions, Fredericksburg is always brimming with
activity with more than 150 special events and festivals held annually.
Here, the Great Outdoors is Greater
The 1,643-acre Enchanted Rock Park is home to the second-largest
granite dome in North America. A moderately strenuous trail leads
visitors to the top for a spectacular view, while other areas provide
challenges for serious rock climbers.
Fredericksburg lies in the top peach-producing county in Texas, and
during June through August the town is filled with roadside stands
selling peaches and other fruits in season. Grapes also grow well in
the Hill Country soil, and the area is the home of nine wineries that
have produced award-winning wines, with most open daily for tours and
tastings. Wine trail maps and limo winery tours are available.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy Wildseed Farms, the largest working
wildflower farm in the United States, which includes walking trails, a
retail market and the Fredericksburg Herb Farm, which is a celebration
of scent and color. And the many lavender farms in the area allow
cut-your-own lavender when in season.
“The Bat Tunnel” is open nightly from June through October. This
abandoned railroad tunnel is summer home to more than 2 million Mexican
free-tailed bats, which emerge each evening around dusk.
Our Wide Hauptstrasse Beckons
Wonderful dining and specialty food items are a tradition here as well.
Fredericksburg offers more than 70 restaurants and bakeries that
feature German, Bavarian, Texan, Mexican, Chinese and Italian foods.
Other delicacies include sausage and meat products, jams and jellies,
fudge and specialty candies, pastries and breads.
For the "shopaholic" in the family, Fredericksburg offers our historic
shopping district with more than 150 specialty stores. Here one can
find items crafted by many Hill Country artisans, fine apparel, home
decor, kitchen wares, gift items and antiques.
Since there is more to do than a day trip will allow, Fredericksburg
has more than 1,000 hotel and motel rooms, more than 300
bed-and-breakfasts and guest houses, inns and plus RV parks and
campsites.
