CHARLESTON, SC

Charleston is America's most beautifully preserved architectural and historic treasure, with a rich, 300 year heritage. Since its founding in 1670, Charleston has played an important and often pivotal role in the course of American history. The city's past is a testament to the spirit and tenacity of its citizens.

Charleston lends itself to walking, and many visitors find this to be a convenient way to see everything the city has to offer. Beautiful homes, churches and public buildings line the city's tree-lined streets. Magnificent formal gardens grace much of the Historic District, adding to the beauty of the colonial, antebellum and Victorian architecture. Some of the more popular attractions are White Point Gardens, (commonly called "The Battery") and the Waterfront Park. Other must-see attractions include the new South Carolina Aquarium, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, the Gibbes Museum, the Charleston Museum and its Museum Houses, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Edmondston-Alston House and the Nathaniel Russell House.

Charleston is a city of celebration, so there's sure to be a festival or special event occurring during your visit! Some of the most widely-known include the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, the Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, Spoleto Festival USA, the Fall Candlelight Tour of Homes, the MOJA Festival and Christmas in Charleston. Numerous other events highlighting the arts and Charleston's diverse cultural heritage are held throughout the year. Weekly event schedules are available at the Visitor Center to assist you during your stay.

Visitors to Charleston are constantly amazed at the quality and variety of restaurants that can be enjoyed. These range from southern-style to five-star French and everything in between! Shopping in Charleston is just as diverse and exciting. Be sure to visit the quaint antique shops along King Street, and browse for hand-made sweetgrass baskets and other crafts in Charleston's Historic District and famous Old City Market. From its recognizable shops such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Gucci to its specialty stores like Ben Silver and Croghanís Jewel Box, Charleston is a shopper's delight. The entire city is chock full of interesting and unusual specialty shops.

And don't forget about our beaches! Wide, beautiful sands and sparkling, clean water. Sure, it could describe lots of places you'd love to go. And happily, it describes the necklace of beaches that line the edges of the Charleston region. Many are easily accessed through our network of county beach parks. No matter your "beach style," we've got your covered. People-watch on the Isle of Palms or laze in the rays on Kiawah. Jump into the funky surf culture of Folly or explore the undeveloped sandbars of Sullivan's Island. Bring some sun block, a good book and rest assured — there's a custom-made beach experience waiting for you here.

You're sure to find Charleston to be a destination unlike any other. The only thing you won't find is a shortage of interesting things to see, do and enjoy!
