The fall and winter seasons are great times to visit Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, providing the perfect backdrop to learn about the region’s rich history. Whether you’re here for the history or to learn about the area’s vast fruit industry, these seasons are ideal to experience the passion of Gettysburg.

With the cool temperatures and colorful leaves, autumn is a great time to explore the Gettysburg National Military Park. With the summer crowds long gone, fall visitors can take in the breathtaking battlefield and learn about an important time in our nation’s history. Explore the scenic, yet hallowed, battlegrounds on your own, with a licensed battlefield uide, in a variety of ways. See the fields as the cavalry did with a variety of horseback tours – or take a new adventure and tour on Segway. Living history encampments can be found on the battlefield and in town during the fall months.

Fall and winter are also good opportunities to explore Gettysburg’s civilian side. Take a town tour or visit a variety of museums to learn about how Gettysburg’s 2,400 residents coped with more than 165,000 soldiers marching into town. Learn about the aftermath of the battle and how this small town cleaned up and created a cemetery to bury the dead.

In Gettysburg, November is all about Lincoln. With the anniversary of the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery and the Gettysburg Address on November 19th, visitors can help commemorate this famous speech with a variety of programming and attractions, including the Gettysburg Train Station, the David Wills House as well as the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. That weekend take in the Remembrance Day Parade with thousands of military and civilian reenactors honoring our Civil War history. In the evening, you are invited to return to the Soldier’s National Cemetery for the annual Illuminary – an awe-inspiring site.

If festivals are more your interest, don’t miss the National Apple Harvest Festival on Oct. 2-3 and 9-10. Spend the day – or the weekend – enjoying live entertainment, strolling hundreds of craft vendors, and enjoying delectable apple-infused or inspired cuisine. Bring the little ones to enjoy the petting zoo or the orchard tours – you will even discover antique and classic cars. This festival is so much fun, they had to stretch it to two weekends!
