Hastings is nestled along the bluffs of the St. Croix, Vermillion and Mississippi Rivers, Hastings is reminiscent of a 19th century town. It’s renowned for its Victorian architecture and boasts 63 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The LeDuc Historic Estate, a Gothic Revival mansion, is open for tours and special events throughout the year. The city’s unique, historic downtown district is just one reason Hastings was named one of Minnesota’s “Best Day Trips.”
A whole year of festivals
Spring and summer bring fun-filled events. A popular new event is the Saturday night Cruise-Ins, featuring classic cars, held every other Saturday evening from May 30th through October 3rd. The Alexis Bailly Vineyard was the first to make all its wine from Minnesota-grown grapes. Visitors are encouraged to walk through the vineyards, bring a picnic lunch, sample and purchase the wines. Tours are available Fridays – Sundays, June – mid-November. During July, thousands of people come to Rivertown Days, a community-wide festival, which features a parade, music festival, arts and crafts, flea market, carnival and much more. Also, in July, step back in time with the Little Log House Antique Power Show.
Fans of the great outdoors will appreciate Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center, Spring Lake Park Reserve and nearby Afton State Park with fantastic river views and trails. Picnic near Vermillion Falls or watch boats and barges pass through Lock and Dam #2.
A mild fall afternoon is perfect for boating on the Mississippi or fitting in that last golf game at one of the 10 area courses. The St. Croix Apple Festival, in early October, offers a variety of fun for all ages. Bring your family and friends and spend the day finding that perfect pumpkin, frolicking through a corn maze, picking apples or taking a hayride.
Located between Welch Village and Afton Alps down-hill ski areas and nearby cross-country ski trails, Hastings offers sports enthusiasts several choices for winter recreation. Carpenter Nature Center invites adventurers to put on a pair of snowshoes and walk through the wilderness. There’s also plenty of action at Treasure Island Casino, where visitors cash in on gaming, dining and entertainment.
Shopping and dining
Antique stores, gift shops, boutiques and more await you in Hastings. As the sun begins to set, enjoy a meal at the Levee Café, stroll down to the historic Mississippi Belle. And don’t miss the cuisine at Wiederholt’s Supper Club, which in keeping with Hastings’ historic tradition has been open for over 70 years. At the end of the day, unwind in a whirlpool suite at one of the lodging facilities.
