ST. IGNACE, MI

Where Michigan's Upper Peninsula meets the Lower Peninsula, you'll find historic St. Ignace, one of the oldest cities in the state. Originally a missionary settlement founded by French explorer Jacques Marquette, today St. Ignace is known for its natural beauty.

St. Ignace lies on the northern side of the Mackinac Bridge, the grand suspension bridge that links northern and southern Michigan. Numerous locales in the city provide stunning vistas of the Straits of Mackinac and the Great Lakes on either side. Mackinac Island is also just a ferry ride away.

Statues of folk legend Paul Bunyan and his blue ox greet visitors at Castle Rock, a limestone stack jutting out into Lake Huron. Climb up to the top and admire the view from roughly 200 feet above the lake's surface!

There's plenty of pristine wilderness to explore around St. Ignace. Hiawatha National Forest encompasses over 800,000 acres, including 77 miles of shoreline, three historic lighthouses and plenty of opportunities for hiking and canoeing. When there's snow on the ground, rev up your snowmobile: St. Ignace is the trailhead for hundreds of miles of groomed trails that criss-cross the Upper Peninsula. Or head to Silver Mountain for snow tubing, downhill skiing and snowboarding.

Autumn in St. Ignace brings crisp air and spectacular fall color -- the perfect ambiance for a leisurely drive or a boat trip along the shore. And when the leaves have fallen, the first snows and the silhouettes of bare tree limbs make the perfect setting for a hunting trip.
