DORCHESTER COUNTY, MD

Dorchester County’s treasures are found traveling roads leading to scenic agricultural and marshland landscapes and quaint towns and fishing villages. Begin at the visitor center at Sailwinds Park, open daily to assist in exploring the heart of Chesapeake Country with touring information, a boardwalk, a playground and spectacular views of the Choptank River.

The centerpiece of the historic district in Cambridge offers stately homes of the 18th and 19th century along brick-paved, tree-lined High Street. Home to six Maryland governors, the magnificent waterfront along the Choptank River offers breathtaking vistas of pleasure and working craft. Skipjacks can still be seen in the harbor where hundreds of them once plied the oyster trade, and a working seafood house carries on the heritage of the native watermen. Cruise aboard an authentic skipjack, the Nathan of Dorchester; take a narrated Michener’s Chesapeake cruise on the Cambridge Lady; or dine aboard the authentic 80-foot paddle wheelers, Dorothy Megan and Choptank River Queen. Visit the Richardson Maritime Museum and Boatworks, Brannock Maritime Museum and Dorchester County Historical Society to learn more about this seaport town. View works by local artists at the Dorchester Arts Center. Nearby, the Harriet Tubman Headquarters and Bucktown Village Foundation offer tours of landmarks where this conductor of the Underground Railroad lived and worked.

With more than 27,000 acres, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is sanctuary to bald eagles, Canada geese and other migratory waterfowl during fall and winter. West of Blackwater, visit Hooper Island where you will see workboats tied to the wharves, crab pots piled high and smell the aroma of steamed crabs. To the east, visit historic Vienna on the banks of the Nanticoke River. Landmarks here date back to 1768 when Vienna was an international port. To the north, explore Hurlock, Secretary and East New Market. With a church located at each of the four entrances, the entire town of East New Market is on the National Register of Historic Places.

West of Cambridge is Spocott Windmill, a working replica of a wooden post windmill used for grinding grain. On the complex, explore a one-room Victorian schoolhouse, tenant house, blacksmith shop and a country store museum. Imagine as you travel there, the route used today was originally an Native American path.

The opening of Maryland’s Eastern Shore’s first destination resort, the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay, is situated on more than 350 acres and gleams along the shore of the Choptank River. Enjoy the revitalization of downtown Cambridge with a host of new galleries and gourmet, antiquing and specialty shops. Have a casual lunch or enjoy an Irish Pub setting. Come to experience our excellent dining, warm hospitality, spectacular bicycling, paddling and boating opportunities in the heart of Chesapeake Country.
