You’ll find all that and more when you visit LaFourche-Bayou County. The Jean Lafitte National Park Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux tells the story of the Acadians who settled in southeastern Louisiana. A Cajun Jam Session takes place Monday evenings - all musicians and dancers are invited. Several large plantations are easily accessible.
Madewood Plantation is considered the finest example of a Greek-Revival mansion in the state. Oak Alley Plantation's quarter-mile alley of 28 sheltering oak trees over 250 years old still greets you today. Laura – Br'er Rabbit’s American home - is one of the oldest and largest existing plantation complexes on the River Road. Picnic and enjoy the outdoors at The Edward Douglas White Historic Site, an antebellum Creole cottage on six acres of land, surrounded by sugar cane fields.
St. Joseph Co-Cathedral is Renaissance Romanesque, with several features reflecting architectural design common to churches in Paris and Rome. The Rose Window over the main entrance is modeled after the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. St. John's Episcopal Church is one of the oldest Episcopal churches west of the Mississippi River, and is one of America’s few remaining examples of Georgian church architecture.
Some of the best outdoor recreation that South Louisiana has to offer is only minutes from Thibodaux, the parish (county) seat. Swamp tours offer spectacular swamp and bottom land scenery. The boat guides are experienced alligator hunters who have lived, worked and played in the swamps all their lives. Traveling south through the area’s smaller communities affords a picturesque scenic drive along Bayou LaFourche. The bayou itself changes from a lazy, slow moving stream to a widened, quick, vibrant waterway. Bayou Lafourche meets the Gulf of Mexico at Port Fourchon. The port serves as a terminal for much of the oil activity in South Louisiana, and is home to many fishing camps.
