IBERIA PARISH, LA

Visit Louisiana's hot side: New Iberia, Avery Island, Jefferson Island, Jeanerette, Loreauville and Delcambre

We invite you to experience some of Louisiana's famous attractions, word-renowned Cajun and Creole cuisine, rich culture and wonderful festivals that dot the lush tropical landscape in the heart of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. New Iberia is located in Cajun Country just 20 miles south of Lafayette, two hours west of New Orleans and four hours east of Houston. Stroll New Iberia's award-winning Main Street home to beautiful architecture, stately plantation homes, art galleries, antique shops, specialty shops, museums, restaurants and entertainment venues. Step back in time along the banks of the mystical Bayou Teche that runs parallel with the gorgeous Main Street and tour the Shadows-on-the-Teche Plantation Home and Gardens, the Gulf South's only National Trust for Historic Preservation property. The captivating Main Street Historic District is the setting in the famed Dave Robicheaux novels by New Iberia native and award-winning author James Lee Burke.

The tranquil Avery Island is home of the world famous TABASCO factory. Enjoy a guided tour, history film and shop in the original TABASCO Country Store. The famous sauce is still produced using the same process on the very site where it was invented in 1868. Avery Island remains the headquarters for the worldwide company.

While on the island retreat visitors can also encounter nature at the magnificent Jungle Gardens with a self-guided, 5-mile drive or walk through live oak groves, along lagoons teeming with plants and wildlife graced by an ancient Buddha Temple. Located in the New Iberia Historic District is the Conrad Rice Mill, America's oldest working rice mill and KONRIKO Company Store with an array of specialty food products, local art and crafts and history film on the Acadians. A tour of the rice mill reveals a rare surviving example of a factory using a turn-of-the century belt-driven power transmission with a substantial portion of the mill's original equipment still in use today. Venture to the stunning Rip Van Winkle Gardens of Jefferson Island and tour the semi-tropical garden and the Joseph Jefferson mansion with a film of the 1980 catastrophe on beautiful Lake Peigneur. Dine at Cafe Jefferson overlooking Lake Peigneur. There are charming bed and breakfast cottages on site.

Another notable site is Antique Rose Ville listed in the National Directory for Gardens in America with its Renoudet Cottage (circa 1830) surrounded by distinctively designed gardens and native plants including cypress trees, Louisiana irises and a pond graced by a European-designed lattice bridge. Be sure to include the Bayou Teche Museum and the Jeanerette Sugar Museum on your list of hot spots not to be missed. A myriad of recreational activities abound as well, including boating, golfing, charter fishing, swamp tours and two of Louisiana's most visited state parks, Cypremort Point and Lake Fausse Pointe State Park. Bird lovers will enjoy the America's WETLAND Birding Trial Atchafalaya Loop, the centerpiece of the Atchafalaya Basin, America's largest river swamp. We have an experience that is too hot to pass up!
