Start your bourbon trail adventure at the most award-winning distillery in the world — Buffalo Trace. We proudly hold the title of the oldest continually operating distillery in America, remaining operational even during Prohibition — for “medicinal” purposes. A trip to Buffalo Trace offers visitors a taste of history, heritage and of course, fine Kentucky Bourbon. Rich in history and hospitality, Buffalo Trace has something to offer everyone. The distillery sits on 130 acres with four centuries of architecture represented on site. The grounds are beautifully manicured all year long with colorful blossoms in the spring and vibrant foliage the fall.
TOURS
Buffalo Trace Distillery offers three different tours, each providing a unique look at the bourbon-making process and its own historical perspective. All of the tours are complimentary.
THE TRACE TOUR
The Trace Tour is offered six days a week year-round and is available to all walk-in visitors. The Trace Tour leaves from the Gift Shop on the hour with the first tour at 9 a.m. and the last tour beginning at 3 p.m. Monday - Friday. On Saturday, the first tour is at 10 a.m. with the last tour beginning at 2 p.m. During the tour you will experience a century-old aging warehouse, the hand-bottling of premium bourbons, a free sample of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and lots of southern hospitality!
HARD HAT TOUR
The “Hard Hat” Tour is offered six days a week during our Distilling season — September through June — by reservation only. This is a behind-the-scenes view of each step in the distillation process. See it all first hand — from the grain delivery and mashing in our giant steam-generated pressure cookers to the fermentation and distillation. You will get a chance to see the pure distilled liquid, known as “white dog” coming out of our three-story column still. If you’ve ever wanted to know exactly what goes into crafting Buffalo Trace Bourbon, this tour is for you. Space is limited so make reservations early.
POST PROHIBITION TOUR
The Post Prohibition Tour is an architectural and history-based tour. Travel back in time to the period directly following the Repeal of Prohibition, 1930s - 1950s. You’ll see historical archives and photographs in our George T. Stagg Gallery, walk through the old boiler room and witness the building expansions that were added on the original distillery foundations. This tour is by reservation only.
A visit to Buffalo Trace has much to offer, in addition to our signature brand, Buffalo Trace. The Distillery is also home to great bourbons like Blanton’s — the world’s first single barrel bourbon–the famous Van Winkle line of bourbons and the limited edition Antique Collection.
