We're strong in spirit -- A Southern spirit that welcomes you home to one of The Best Small Towns in America. A religious spirit that's appropriate for the home of the first diocese of the West. And a little spirit we call bourbon. Our eclectic shops, cultural and historical heritage blend beautifully with that spirit. We're home to My Old Kentucky Home and Stephen Foster - The Musical, vintage trains, and museums dedicated to the Civil War, railroads and bourbon. Our more than 30 annual events draw people from around the globe to sample the spirits, sounds and flavors that are quintessentially Bardstown. In fact, Kentucky's Bourbon Trail, of which Bardstown is the heart, was featured in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, the New York Times bestseller by Patricia Schultz. In Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World®, you have many opportunities to enjoy a hands-on tour and Sample our Spirit at one or more distilleries. Surround yourself in our Bourbon Heritage and see why Bardstown is to bourbon what Napa Valley is to wine. Once upon a time, life was slower and travel meant a trip to the local train depot. Trains were small-town America's link to the world, and the engine that fueled industry. Railroads played an important role in the history of Bardstown and Kentucky as points of contention during the Civil War and an indispensable part of the Bourbon industry. Distilleries depended on trains for materials and shipping. Bardstown was also an early stop for the mighty Louisville & Nashville (L&N) railroad company, which - at its zenith - covered 6,000 miles and 13 states. In the tranquil beauty of historic Bardstown, America's love affair with trains continues. You can still ride the rails aboard vintage train cars pulled by a restored L&N steam locomotive, or you can relax and dine aboard a completely restored luxurious 1940s dining car as it winds its way through the beautiful countryside. Visit the Civil War Museum at Old Bardstown Village and learn the story of the Civil War's Western Front. See the mansion where the first Kentucky Confederate flag was flown. Get a candid glimpse of the lives of women during this struggle at the Women of the Civil War Museum - the first of its kind. Close to Bardstown are many other sites of importance such as St. Rose Priory, the school of the president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, and nearby Perryville, where one of the war's bloodiest Kentucky battles was fought.
