Known worldwide for golf, Augusta is steeped in a rich history and has plenty of activities sure to please the whole family. Tour the Boyhood Home of Woodrow Wilson, the restored home where the former president grew up during the Civil War. Visit the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History, which honors the achievements of one of Georgia’s most influential African-American educators, and has unique historical and fine art exhibitions. The Augusta Museum of History features a number of permanent exhibits as well as feature exhibits, including “The Godfather of Soul: Mr. James Brown” and “Celebrating a Grand Tradition: The Sport of Golf.” They even have an authentic green jacket.
If outdoor activities are more your taste, take a relaxing walk along Riverwalk Augusta, a two-tiered park on the banks of the Savannah River. Learn about the mill heyday by taking a Petersburg boat ride on the Augusta Canal, the oldest canal in the United States still in use for its original purpose and a National Heritage Area. More active guests can canoe or kayak the Canal or can walk or bicycle towpath and trails.
Plan something special for the kids, or kids at heart, at one of Augusta's many family-friendly venues. With more than 250 interactive math and science exhibits, Fort Discovery is a high-tech, high-fun learning center for children of all ages. And if sports are what they're into, the Augusta GreenJackets, a minor league class "A" affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, play at Lake Olmstead Stadium from April through August.
