It’s easy to recognize why we are called the “Forgotten Coast.”  There are no high-rise hotels or bungee cord jumps.  In the peak of “high season”, lucky beachcombers often find themselves on a mile stretch of completely deserted beach sprinkled with shells yet to be found or gliding in a kayak on the serene bay while Egrets, Blue Heron and Eagles soar.  Here we trade long lists of “things to do” with a vast plan of accomplishing absolutely nothing.  We’ve learned how to let the sand, sun and surf slow the pace as well as the true meaning of the term “laid back.” 

St. George Island is a barrier island located in Franklin County within the Panhandle of Florida.  We are approximately 80 miles northwest of Tallahassee and 80 miles east of Panama City and this is truly a unique area.  It’s one of the last places in the United States to easily interact with nature:  To see it, experience it and enjoy it.

After crossing the bridge to the island, a brand new lighthouse and visitor’s center welcomes guests.  Our original lighthouse was erected on Little St. George Island, (just to the west of us), in 1852 but finally succumbed to beach erosion and pounding waves in 2005.  The plans for the original lighthouse were obtained from the National Archives in Washington D.C. and using as much of the original materials as possible, it re-opened on December 1^st of 2008.
