The Muscle Shoals area – Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Sheffield and Florence - is a treasure chest filled with vacation possibilities. From the miraculous story of Helen Keller to the inspirational waters
of the Tennessee River, the Shoals is a diverse destination with something for everyone.
For outdoor enthusiasts there is a variety of fishing to lure anglers – bass, crappie and catfish. Hiking, biking, and birding trails abound and wildlife is plentiful– from Joe Wheeler State Park to the Natchez Trace Parkway, with stops in between.
If swinging a golf club is more to your taste, the Shoals is home to two Robert Trent Jones courses, the Schoolmaster and the Fighting Joe, located on the banks of the Tennessee River.
Like the river, music flows through "The Shoals." Feel the blues at the W.C. Handy Music Festival or marvel at the vast array of talent by touring the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
Helen Keller and W.C. Handy were born in the Shoals and their homes are open to the public. Frank Lloyd Wright designed a unique house that is now a museum. Several pre-civil war sites, including Pope’s Tavern, LaGrange College Site and Belle Mont Mansion, may be visited.
Native American history is rich and displayed at the Indian Mound and Museum and in a “Trail of Tears” memorial in Spring Park.
Seasonal tours of historic homes, walking tours, cemetery tours, and guided trolley tours are offered.
Family fun awaits in Spring Park, where a train ride and other amusements provide excitement, climaxed at dusk by a spectacular display of dancing waters.
For the offbeat traveler, there is the world's only Coon Dog Cemetery!
