Party Like a Politician—Without all the Carbon Emissions
Now that Denver’s going green, the 2008 Democratic National Convention will have you saving your money along with the planet.
If you are planning to partake in the political party scene even though your name doesn’t make the “invitation only” lists, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. The Denver Host Committee has purposed to make the 2008 convention the greenest in history. One of the many benefits of this, besides reducing your carbon footprint and trans-fat intake, is saving major bucks. Here is a list of the top five eco-friendly and totally free ways to enjoy the DNC without being a delegate or convention attendee.
UnCONVENTIONal Fare in Highland Square Days (Aug. 24-26)
A free shuttle featuring the sign “Hop, Skip, and a Jump” will make hourly pick-ups in Highland Square. Denver’s hip and historic shopping district is the perfect place to kill time between events. Just a 10-minute commute away from all the downtown hotels, you’ll love the small-town feel, eclectic boutiques and fine dining options. Colorado Green Frontier Fest (Aug. 24)
The Green Frontier Fest is an event where visitors can explore ecologically friendly options for living green and healthy, ultimately saving money and resources. A full spectrum of sustainable options, from cutting-edge renewable technology to everyday home solutions will be showcased. Come and enjoy the interactive exhibits, farmers market, eco-carnival games, music and entertainment, and presentation by guest speakers at the Denver Performing Arts Complex from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Target Free Day at the Denver Art Museum (Aug. 25)
Admission into the Denver Art Museum (DAM) will be waived on Monday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Known for its bold architecture recalling the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the DAM has world-class collections and spectacular exhibits. Don’t miss the opportunity to view the works of American artists Claude Monet, Eugene Boudin and Frederick Childe Hassam for free.
Outside of Convention: The Post of People Through American Democracy in Words and Music (Aug. 24—26)
The power of American oratory, music, politics and community will be celebrated during the week of the DNC. The Reverend Jesse Jackson, composer David Amram and political writer John Nichols will be among the many talented individuals from the city of Denver to commemorate the power of voice in democracy. Come participate in an event that encompasses the spirit and fervor of the 2008 convention.
Freewheelin’—A Citywide Bike-Sharing Program (Aug. 24–28)
You can freewheel your way through Denver with this innovative initiative that supports carbon-emission reduction and healthy, active lifestyles. From 7 a.m.–7 p.m., about 1,000 bikes will be available free of charge for anyone willing to bike their way through Denver. The Freewheelin’ bike racks are set up at various points around this bike-friendly city.
