Traveling by train has some of the same rules as air travel. Make sure you have your documents in hand before you leave for the station. You will need your tickets and an acceptable form of identification. Check the regulations for baggage on your trip. Most trains will limit the number and size of bags for carry-on and checked baggage.
Seating on travel trains is usually on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are traveling as a family or group, you may want to arrive early to be able to sit together.
While you may be perfectly content to settle back in the chair and watch the scenery, younger riders may become bored and need some entertainment. Consider bringing along a CD player, video game, coloring book or magazines. A fun idea is to bring binoculars to enhance the viewing from the windows.
Longer train trips can include sleeping accommodations. If you are unfamiliar with this option, it is best to visit the train company’s website to review the sizes and features.
It is important to know where the train station is in your destination. Will you be within walking distance of your hotel? Will you need to take a taxi or shuttle? Plan for your situation to make the experience a relaxing, enjoyable one.
