Getting married at your favorite vacation spot can offer the perfect backdrop for the wedding album. And with careful planning, you can avoid some common pitfalls.

Getting married at your favorite vacation spot can offer the perfect backdrop for the wedding album. And with careful planning, you can avoid some common pitfalls.

Saying “I do” to the proposal is the easy part. When it comes to a destination wedding, the secret is in the planning - lots and lots of planning. From the location to the attire, food and attendees, a destination wedding requires numerous decisions.

The location is important for several reasons. When you get married, you are subject to local laws. Some locations have a residency requirement for a marriage license. Location is also important when it comes to your wedding guests. Decide if you will be covering their travel costs or expecting them to pay their own way.

For the wedding attire, again think about the location. Getting married on the sand at the beach means that a full-length gown and high heels aren’t very practical. Also think about the men’s attire. A standard tuxedo will probably be too hot and uncomfortable on the beach in the summer.

Depending on the scale of the wedding, there will be vendors to deal with. You may know which florist is best in your hometown, but it is unlikely you know who to trust in your destination. The same is true for facility rental, food service, receptions, and the list goes on. For these and other reasons, a destination wedding is often easier to accomplish with the help of a local wedding planner.
