Dine like a Local

Trying new dishes and local cuisine is an important part of a vacation. But one bad meal can leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

Trying new dishes and local cuisine is an important part of a vacation. But one bad meal can leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

When you go on vacation to an exciting new location, the last thing you want to do is eat at the same chain restaurants you have in your own hometown. Where’s the fun in that? After all, a vacation is about new experiences.

Look for an established family-owned restaurant. When researching your vacation destination, search the listings for local restaurants. Look for those who have been in business for many years. The restaurant business is tough, and those that aren’t good usually don’t last very long.

Family-owned restaurants are a great way to have a more genuine experience. It makes you feel welcome to have a member of the family greet you and even serve you. Plus, a family-owned business has more of a vested interest in the satisfaction of the customer and will often go out of their way to make your visit special.

Ask for recommendations from the locals. No one knows the local restaurants better than the people who live and work here. Plus they can often help you find great deals.

Try a progressive dinner one evening to sample multiple locations. Have drinks at one stop, then appetizers at the next. From there, pick a third location for the main course and still another for dessert.
