CHARLOTTETOWN, PE

All it takes is a stroll through the city to see and feel a sense of pride within the streets and parks. Over 150 hanging flowerpots line the city streets during the summer season; and just in time for Christmas the city puts up over 175,000 lights turning the city into a magical winter wonderland. Many of the lights remain on display throughout the winter months until the end of the Jack Frost Children’s WinterFest, in February. With its clean streets, colourful heritage homes, and beautifully manicured lawns, it is easy to see why the city has received two Communities in Bloom awards and three National Winter Lights awards.

For the second year in a row, Canadian Business Magazine ranked Charlottetown #2 in “Best Places to do Business in Canada.”

Formerly called Abegweit, meaning “cradle on the waves”, by the Mi'kmaq Indians, Ile St. Jean by the French, and Island of St. John by the English, Prince Edward Island (its present name since 1799) came under British rule after the Treaty of Paris in 1763. A top priority of the British was to have their new acquisitions surveyed. In 1764, Captain Samuel Holland was appointed the Surveyor-General and given the task of surveying British holdings in the New World. He recommended what is the current site of Charlottetown and suggested this be one of the primary Island towns and be named Charlotte Town in honour of Queen Charlotte, wife of George III of England.

The City of Charlottetown is the capital city of Prince Edward Island, located on the south shore of Prince Edward Island. Charlottetown is rich in history and culture, celebrating its status as the "Birthplace of Confederation" in many entertaining ways. As a very lively cultural centre, attractions range from musicals, dinner theatre, historical tours, and stages covering Celtic to jazz. Charlottetown is home to many excellent galleries, specialty shops, and product tours.

Charlottetown has dozens of hotels, motels, and bed & breakfasts with top quality meeting facilities to accommodate holiday and business travelers who visit the City each year.

Located in the heart of Charlottetown is the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre (CDPEC) . This state-of-the-art Entertainment Centre offers live and simulcast harness racing, 225 slot machines, as well as the Player’s Club – a FREE rewards program that lets you collect points while you play your favourite slot machines. Overlooking the track is the Top of the Park Dining Room, which offers an all-you-care-to-eat-buffet, a truly delectable eating experience.

History comes alive when you stroll Charlottetown's historic district with the Founders' Hall Confederation Players, a troupe of costumed, young, bilingual Canadians trained as living Fathers and Ladies of Confederation. They entertain and enlighten during their daily walking tours and historical reenactments.
