Amherst was established in 1764, exactly two miles west of its current location – this occurred after the Expulsion of the Acadians. One of the New England settlements, which became one of the many communities along the shores of the Bay of Fundy, grew to become the town of Amherst. Once a gristmill and tannery were built slightly east of the settlement people gradually moved closer to them, and by 1850 Amherst was located where you find it today.
