You only have to take a short drive through Steinbach to realize that community spirit displays itself through recreation, sport, and leisure. The City boasts a number of well-kept parks for family outings. These parks, maintained by a crew dedicated to the beautification of Steinbach, are eye-catching year after year. Take some time to soak up the beauty! Outdoor activities are a passion among Steinbach residents. Ball parks, soccer fields, a golf course, and several kilometers of cycling and walking paths all provide excellent opportunities to stay active and have fun.
Steinbach also has several first-rate recreational facilities, including the Aquatic Centre, two arenas, a Cultural Arts Centre, and several fitness centres. These indoor recreation options allow for year-round enjoyment. In winter, several outdoor skating rinks are created throughout the City and in summer, the Quarry Park skateboard and BMX park is a popular place for young people.
In September of 1874, an entourage of 18 families from South Russia (presently Ukraine) stepped off a boat at Mennonite Landing Site at the junction of the Red and Rat Rivers. This group along with other members of the Kleine Gemeinde ("small church") left their homeland because the Russian government was threatening to discontinue the practice of military exemption for Mennonites (along with other reasons, such as scarcity of land). Led by Rev. Jacob Barkman, they made their way east on lumbering ox carts, and came to a stop at the edge of a creek where they pitched their tents. This was the beginning of Steinbach, named after the "stony brook" which flowed at their feet as well as after their village in Russia. One way to get to know the history of Steinbach is through their self-guided Heritage Walking Tour which provides you with hundreds of interesting historical facts about the pioneers who started this community and introduce you to some of the notable landmarks in the city.
The City of Steinbach is privileged to have a number of families pay tribute to their ancestors by way of a ‘heritage park.’ The City features more than ten 'heritage parks' throughout its downtown area as well as one larger one located beside the Jake Epp Library. The Helena Loewen Park, one of the ‘heritage parks,’ is a beautiful place to relax and read, being located beside the Jake Epp Library. This is the newest addition to the City’s parks. It’s beauty and serenity pay tribute to its namesake, Helena Loewen, a devout and patient woman who carefully tended to the growth of her family just as she did with her flowers and fruit trees that grew on this site.
