PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB

The Portage area was discovered by Radisson and Groseilliers, two Europeans. The two were searching the area for furs between 1658 and 1690. However, in 1738, it was Pierre Gaultier de Varnes Sieur de la Verendrye who established Fort la Reine on what is now Portage la Prairie. The name of the city originates from the transporting of goods from the Red and Assiniboine Rivers to Lake Manitoba, hence “prairie portage.” Portage la Prairie became official in 1880, and soon became the City of Portage la Prairie as of 1907 -- making it one of the oldest communities in Manitoba. In addition to the rich heritage to explore there are plenty of sites to see.

Relieve the heat of summer at Splash Island, an adventure water park for the entire family. Have no fear? Then you should definitely ride the “Splash Attack” and/or the “Funnel Tunnel,” our gigantic water slides. For the kids, there’s the “Bubble Gum Run” slide and a spray area. Everyone can enjoy the fountains, mini geysers and bubbler bench to relax. In addition, the park also includes three 25-meter swimming lanes, a lazy river, non-slip decking and a zero-depth beach-like entry. You’re welcome to bring in your picnic foods of choice as there are no concession services, but outside food is permitted.

Learn about the Delta Marsh which is located on the south shore of Lake Manitoba just 30 minutes north of Portage la Prairie. The marsh is great to visit especially during the spring and fall due to the migration of birds to this premier location. The whole family can take interpretive trails at the St. Ambroise Provincial Park as well as in the Delta’s village. There is also a Delta Marsh Birding Festival which is held at the University of Manitoba’s Delta Marsh Field Station every May on the west side of the marsh -- the station also houses research facilities, education, meetings, conferences and workshops.

After exploring the marsh be sure to check out Delta Beach located west of the marsh area; it’s a great locale for swimming, sunbathing, camping or just relaxing with the family.

Take in the heritage of Portage at the Fort la Reine Museum and Pioneer Village. The fort was the first to be built in the area in 1738 by La Verendrye on the Assiniboine River. Step back in time as you explore the blacksmith’s shop, stable, schoolhouse, church and other original buildings to the settlement.
