CANADA [LIST] / CANADA [MAP] / ALBERTA / JASPER

JASPER, AB

Jasper, Alberta, Canada is the king of mountains! At the horizon around the entire city appears a crown made of mountain peaks which are protected by Canada’s national park system. Who needs a zoo when you can drive down the road and see sheep and elk or even catch a glimpse of a bear, or some wolves! Mountain goats are also found grazing just a few feet away on the sides of roadways. Want to really get in touch with Jasper’s nature then going camping is the perfect opportunity! The probably of spotting a Grizzly bear is much higher than if you were to stay at a hotel.

The road to Lake Louise is especially scenic thanks to its gorgeous vistas. Halfway there is the motorists hot spot, Columbia Icefield, which has the best view of the glaciers that are part of the Icefield Parkway and Eastern Slopes.

Jasper has always been a town of relaxation and release. A settlement by the North West Company -- a company that built a supply depot on Brule Lake -- became known as Jasper House after a company clerk, Jasper Hawes. In 1884, after the Jasper House was abandoned, the Dominion Government created Jasper Forest Park and set aside an area of about 13,000 sq km in 1907. The park became officially Jasper National Park in 1930 -- after the town became more established with the Jasper-Edmonton road and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Today, over 3 million people come to visit the park each year.
