Freeport is one of the busiest cities on the Grand Bahama island. Located about 100 miles northeast of Fort Lauderdale, Freeport was developed by Wallace Groves after he was granted 50,000 acres of pine and swampy areas by the Bahamian government with mandate to economically develop the area. After the capital, Nassau, Freeport takes second place for the most populous city in the Bahamas.
What is now known as Freeport/Lucaya, due to the evidence of pre-Columbian Lucayan inhabitants, is filled with beautiful beaches to relax on, bustling marketplaces to shop till you drop and the best of the best beachfront hotels and restaurants with superb caribbean cuisine. Visit the International Bazaar near downtown Freeport which is one of the oldest shopping areas in the city. Dubbed the International Bazaar for its divided shopping centers with each representing a specific part of the world: the Middle East section, French section, Oriental section, South American section, etc. Done shopping and the night is young? Try your luck at the Isle of Capri Casino or Freeport’s largest casino, the Casino at Bahamia, or you can enjoy the nightlife at Port Lucaya Marketplace with their Junkanoo Cultural Evenings, karaoke nights, the Bahamian Cultural Show & Down Home Fish Fry and so much more! Or you can enjoy a theatrical musical or comedic show by the Freeport Players Guild.
Freeport boasts three national parks: Rand Nature Centre, Peterson Cay and the Lucayan National Park. The Rand Nature Centre, named after its founder and renowned philanthropist James Rand, is a 100-acre is the first education nature center to be established in the Bahamas. Walk through the nature trail and spot more than 130 Bahamian plants as well as countless colorful birds. Peterson Cay is the smallest of the three parks and is a protected area that includes the cay and a quarter mile of the surrounding marine environment. Go snorkeling or diving along the west side of the cay where you can spot tropical fish, elkhorn, soft corals, sea fans and so much more! Explore 40 acres and five ecological zones at the Lucayan National Park. Discover one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world.
So come to Freeport and explore, discover and remember forever!
